Central Lisbon – Estrela district

Estrela stretches across a hillside between Bairro Alto to the east and Belém to the west. Much of the district is residential, with plenty of pleasant, attractive streets lined with restaurants and places to go out. Higher up the hill, you’ll find a string of major sights, including the Portuguese Parliament at Palácio de São Bento and the magnificent Basílica da Estrela overlooking the harbor. The district’s waterfront area is Alcântara, home to a large cluster of museums, including the National Museum of Ancient Art, perhaps the most important art museum in all of Portugal. From here, the enormous 25 de Abril Bridge heads south toward Almada — Portugal’s answer to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge.

Planning an itinerary in Estrela

An Estrela itinerary falls naturally into two parts. The district’s main axis is Rua do Poço dos Negros (Rua do Poço dos Negros), which runs toward Bairro Alto, while the second area follows the waterfront in Alcântara. At the start of Poço dos Negros sits the Museum of Puppetry. The street itself and the lanes just south of it are packed with restaurants, tightly clustered old homes, and the wonderful atmosphere that defines the heart of the neighborhood. Above the residential streets stands Portugal’s Parliament at Palácio de São Bento, and farther west rises the impressive Basílica da Estrela.

Another cluster of sights lies along the waterfront in the western part of the district, in Alcântara. The neighborhood is built above Doca de Alcântara, whose eastern side is home to the important National Museum of Ancient Art. Nearby you’ll also find the area’s other attractions, including the Museu do Oriente, Doca de Santo Amaro, Museu da Carris, and of course the approach to the iconic 25 de Abril Bridge.

Interesting sights and attractions in Estrela

National Museum of Ancient Art | Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga

Portugal’s National Museum of Art is one of the largest and most important art museums on the Iberian Peninsula. The national collection is housed in a palace built for the Dukes of Alvor, a 17th-century residence notable for its elegant yellow tones. The palace’s official name is Palácio de Alvor-Pombal, though it was also known as Palácio das Janelas Verdes, or the Palace of the Green Windows, after its green window frames.

The palace was purchased by the Portuguese government in 1879, and in 1884 this important museum institution opened its doors there. The museum brings together Portugal’s most important artistic treasures, with works ranging from the 12th century to the early 19th century. Its collection includes a vast number of pieces by the great masters of Portuguese art. During the Baroque period, many artists were active in Portugal and across the Iberian Peninsula, alongside the leading Spanish masters of the age.

The museum’s most famous local masterpiece is the six Panels of Saint Vincent (Painéis de São Vicente de Fora), often shortened simply to the Panels. The work contains 58 figures representing 15th-century Portuguese society. Painted by Nuno Gonçalves, it is considered a major work of pre-Renaissance art.

The museum’s European collection also includes several important works, led by Jheronimus Bosch’s extraordinary triptych “The Temptation of Saint Anthony.” It is one of the wild Dutch painter’s most important works, filled with the horrors of the end times. Another standout is “Saint Jerome,” by the great German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer.

Museum of Puppetry | Museu da Marioneta

This charming museum sits in the eastern part of Estrela, not far from Santos station along the city’s waterfront rail line.

It opened in 2001 in a wing of Convento das Bernardas. Inside is a fascinating collection of marionettes from a wide range of theaters that operated across the Iberian Peninsula and throughout Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries, when the genre was at the height of its popularity.

São Bento Palace | Palácio de São Bento

Palácio de São Bento rises above the neighborhood from high on the hill. The palace was originally the site of Lisbon’s great Benedictine monastery, built in the mid-16th century in an especially striking Mannerist style.

The monastery suffered little damage in the 1755 earthquake and remained well preserved. The Benedictine monks left in 1834, when the site was renamed Palácio das Cortes and became the seat of the Portuguese Parliament. To this day, the palace houses the Assembleia da República, the Assembly of the Republic, whose roughly 230 representatives are elected in national elections.

Basílica da Estrela in Lisbon
Basílica da Estrela in Lisbon

Estrela Basilica | Basílica da Estrela

This beautiful basilica looks out over the entire district from above, not far from the Portuguese Parliament at Palácio de São Bento.

The impressive church was completed in 1790 in a magnificent Baroque style. Its façade features classical elements, with two striking bell towers flanking the entrance. Crowning the basilica is a huge dome decorated with large rose windows. The basilica was built on the grounds of a Carmelite convent, whose wings stand behind the church itself.

The interior is just as splendid and well worth stepping inside to see. The basilica was inspired by the national palace in Mafra (Palácio Nacional de Mafra), northwest of Lisbon.

Estrela Garden | Jardim da Estrela

The lovely gardens opposite Basílica da Estrela are the district’s popular green heart. They are especially beloved by Lisbon residents, and every sunny Sunday they fill with locals and their children.

Shaded corners and benches are scattered throughout the park, along with plenty of trees and lawns, a few duck ponds, and a wonderful old-world European atmosphere. At the center stands an Art Deco-style wrought-iron gazebo where orchestras play on Sundays.

Estrela’s western waterfront: Alcântara

April 25th Bridge | Ponte 25 de Abril

Every city has its iconic bridge, and Lisbon has two. The 25 de Abril Bridge spans the Tagus estuary and stars in countless panoramic photos of the city. To the north is the sweeping Vasco da Gama Bridge, another icon in its own right.

What makes the 25 de Abril Bridge especially compelling is its central location. It rises from the city’s waterfront between Belém to the west and Estrela — technically from the Alcântara neighborhood — to the east, linking the city center with Almada on the Tagus’s southern bank.

This suspension bridge was built in the 1960s and stretches for more than two kilometers. Its reddish color strongly recalls San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. The crossing serves Lisbon’s metropolitan commuter traffic, carrying both cars and trains. Facing the bridge in Almada is the giant Cristo Rei monument (Santuário de Cristo Rei).

Orient Museum | Museu do Oriente

Museu do Oriente presents an impressive collection of art from across the Far East, assembled over the years by Portuguese organizations and private individuals. The collection is made up of modern inherited holdings, but above all of treasures brought back by Portuguese sailors returning from across the Far East, especially from the former colony of Macau.

The museum opened in 2008 in Edifício Pedro Álvares Cabral, right by the waterfront in Alcântara. It stands on the famous Avenida Brasília, which runs along the city’s entire harbor front.

Transport Museum – Carris Museum | Museu da Carris

Lisbon’s transport museum sits right by the approach to the 25 de Abril Bridge, in the western part of Estrela in the Alcântara neighborhood. The museum holds an impressive collection of vehicles, including railway carriages, trams, vintage buses, and more. It is considered especially family-friendly.

In recent years, the area around the museum has been undergoing redevelopment, with cool shops, restaurants, and bars opening up. Part of that transformation includes the neighboring arts center, LX Factory.

Santo Amaro Docks | Doca de Santo Amaro

Doca de Santo Amaro is a Portuguese take on Tel Aviv Port. Set beneath the looming shadow of the 25 de Abril Bridge, it offers a wide range of pleasant restaurants with tables spread out over the marina waters.

In recent years, the marina has become a popular place to go out, drawing large numbers of visitors every day.

Tapada das Necessidades Park | Tapada das Necessidades

This pleasant woodland park rises above the Alcântara neighborhood and was once the hunting grounds of Portugal’s kings. Today it is a public park, offering a charming and well-kept green escape.

From the park, there are lovely views over the Tagus estuary and the 25 de Abril Bridge above it. A few abandoned buildings are scattered throughout the grounds, the best known of them being the Glasshouse of Dom Pedro V (Estufa Dom Pedro V).
