A few tips for your stay in Vilamoura
Vilamoura and Quarteira are two neighboring towns that are easy to move between on a pleasant walk. Vilamoura represents the polished, upscale, master-planned side of the area, while Quarteira keeps more of its local, down-to-earth character, with a traditional fish market, simple restaurants, and more affordable prices.
Together, they create one varied vacation destination: on one side, large modern resorts in Vilamoura; on the other, Portuguese authenticity and everyday beach life. That balance gives the area a particularly rich and well-rounded feel. In practice, when people refer to this area—the beginning of Portugal’s most developed resort strip—they usually just call it Vilamoura, even though it’s really made up of two towns.
Vilamoura is therefore one of the Algarve’s most upscale and best-organized resort destinations. It’s best known for its impressive marina—one of the largest and most beautiful in Europe—surrounded by a wealth of restaurants, exclusive bars, beach clubs, and boat tours. Vilamoura attracts visitors drawn to its flat, accessible beaches, as well as fans of water sports and golf, since the area is considered Portugal’s most important golf hub. If you’re looking for a high-standard vacation with maximum convenience and resorts close to the center, Vilamoura is an excellent choice.
We’ve put together a few tips for a vacation in Vilamoura:
1) Where to stay? For marina life, boat trips, and evenings out, stay by the marina. For surfing, sun, and relaxation, choose the beach. Golf lovers should look around Victoria Golf or the golf area in the city’s northwest. Families may prefer the beach near the marina or the Aquashow water park area, 10 minutes north of town.
2) Best time to visit May–June and September–October bring excellent weather and lighter crowds. July–August is peak season, so it’s important to book early, and parking near the beach and entertainment areas can be a challenge. In winter, it’s pleasant for walking around, but many places and attractions are not operating.
3) Beaches & golf Vilamoura offers accessible beaches along the marina and town, along with high-quality golf courses—ideal for combining a beach vacation with sports. You can easily fit in a morning golf session followed by a boat trip.
4) Boat trips and sea activities Boats leave from the marina for cave tours, dolphin watching, and sunset cruises. Booking ahead is recommended in summer.
5) Transportation and parking If you’ve rented a car, Vilamoura is relatively convenient to get around. The marina and town center can be busy, so it’s important to make sure your hotel has parking. Hotels around the outskirts of town generally don’t have parking issues and are quieter as well, so if you have a car and are looking for a calmer stay, they may be worth considering. Vilamoura also has buses to other Algarve towns and, of course, to Faro, from where public transportation can take you farther afield. So yes, it’s definitely possible to arrive by public transit and stay at the marina or by the beach, where everything is accessible on foot.
6) Casino – Vilamoura is home to the Algarve’s largest casino – this excellent casino sits right between the beach and the marina, near the Crowne Plaza. If you enjoy that scene, it’s worth staying in one of the nearby hotels or around the marina for an easy walk back at the end of the evening.
