Our list of 9 hotels in great locations in Lagos
Before we begin, it’s worth noting that the Lagos (pronounced Lagush) has two main tourist hubs: the Old Town (a charming historic center with lanes, bars, and restaurants) and the marina area (boat trips to the caves, a modern promenade, and easy access). On the eastern side stretches Meia Praia, a long, wide beach that’s especially well suited to families. To the southwest rise the cliffs of Ponta da Piedade, with iconic beaches between them such as Dona Ana, Camilo, and Porto de Mós. West of Lagos lies Praia da Luz, a neighboring seaside town with a quieter feel.
In the Algarve, renting a car is the usual way to get between beaches and attractions, including excellent water parks. Parking around the marina and Meia Praia is generally fairly easy, while in the historic center it’s best to get around on foot during the summer season.

A few tips for your stay in Lagos
Lagos is one of the most beautiful towns in the Algarve—some would even say the most beautiful of all. It blends a historic town filled with lively lanes and streets, a vibrant marina, and some of the prettiest beaches in the Algarve. The town is about an hour’s drive from Faro Airport, and sits almost at the western edge of the Algarve, this peaceful and beautiful region. From here, you can set out on boat trips in search of marine mammals and caves carved into the rock by the ocean, as well as to the vast natural reserve farther west, Costa Vicentina (about an hour away by car). Peak season in Lagos is July–August, while spring and fall are excellent for pleasant weather and lighter crowds. Still, thanks to its relatively large Old Town and huge marina, it’s a place you can visit year-round.
1) Where to stay? In compact Lagos, there are four distinct accommodation areas. The first is the Old Town, which works well year-round and always has something going on. The marina, next to the Old Town, is also very pleasant and close to Meia Praia, the third accommodation area, where you’ll find a long, flat beach and several resorts. Finally, there’s the part of town closer to the cliffs and iconic Ponta da Piedade, where you’ll find a selection of hotels that are especially convenient for travelers with a car.

2) Best season May–June and September–October are wonderful: pleasant sea temperatures, light breezes, and fewer crowds. In July–August, it’s essential to book accommodations and boat trips in advance. Winter is still pleasant for sightseeing, though the water is cold and some businesses close, so if you’re visiting then, it’s best to stay in town or by the marina.
3) Beaches: Meia Praia – wide and flat (great for families); Dona Ana and Camilo – set between dramatic cliffs; Porto de Mós – an easygoing beach to the west with restaurants and a peaceful feel.
4) Cave and dolphin cruises Most boat trips leave from the marina. Early morning or close to sunset is best. In summer, booking ahead is a must. You can also combine a cave trip with dolphin watching.

5) Transportation and parking: In the Old Town, it’s best to avoid arriving by car and get around on foot instead. Parking is relatively convenient around the marina and the beaches of Meia Praia. VAMUS routes connect Lagos with other towns in the Algarve, and Lagos train station is next to the marina at the end of the line, making it convenient for eastbound trips.
6) Food Try the seafood dish Cataplana, fresh sardines, and seafood rice, Arroz de Marisco. Along the promenade and in the lanes, you’ll find a wide range of restaurants at different price points.
