7- to 10-day Portugal itinerary ideas

7–10 day itineraries in Portugal are usually an excellent choice for a first visit to the country. Portugal isn’t especially large, so you can comfortably explore 2–4 of its main regions in a single trip. That gives you a chance to experience cities, nature, and beaches while still leaving a little breathing room instead of rushing from place to place. On this page, we’ve put together several very popular itineraries with a focus on simple logistics: what to do each day and where it makes sense to stay.

Here are seven popular 7–10 day itineraries in Portugal:

  1. 7-day itinerary from Lisbon to Porto via central Portugal
  2. 8-day itinerary: Lisbon and the Algarve
  3. 9-day itinerary: Lisbon, Porto, and the Douro Valley
  4. 10-day itinerary from north to south: Porto, Coimbra, Lisbon, and the Algarve
  5. 8-day itinerary in northern Portugal: Porto, the Douro Valley, and Peneda-Gerês
  6. 8-day itinerary: Lisbon and Madeira Island
  7. 9-day itinerary: Lisbon and São Miguel (the Azores)

Note: The trip length does not necessarily include flight days. If you arrive late or are coming off a long-haul flight, it’s worth adding a day to most of these itineraries.

How do you choose an itinerary in Portugal?

So which itinerary is the best fit for me? Naturally, the classic route between Lisbon and Porto—or the reverse—is the one that lets you see the country’s biggest highlights, and it works for almost everyone. That said, all the itineraries we’ve chosen here can suit any age and any family setup, with the right adjustments.

You can also combine two itineraries into a longer trip, or shorten one. For example, you could add a couple more days to Lisbon and Madeira, then visit towns like Évora, Nazaré, and Óbidos as day trips from Lisbon. Or you could shorten the Porto and Douro Valley route by skipping Peneda-Gerês National Park, depending on the season. If you’re traveling with kids, it’s usually better to focus on one major city plus one region that blends sightseeing and downtime, such as northern Portugal, the Algarve, Madeira, or São Miguel Island, alongside Porto or Lisbon.

6 tips for planning an itinerary in Portugal

1. Mix big cities with the “real Portugal” in between

Lisbon and Porto are essential, but Portugal’s real charm also lies in its mid-sized towns, villages, and the landscapes between them. Don’t build an itinerary that’s just city–city–city. Include stops like Óbidos, Nazaré, Coimbra, or the Douro Valley, and make room for beautiful roads, viewpoints, and small villages. That’s what makes a trip feel richer and less urban.

2. Plan by region, not by “scattered points on the map”

Portugal looks small, but if you bounce from north to south without any geographic logic, you’ll waste valuable time on the road. Build your itinerary around a clear axis:
north, center, south—or one city plus one additional region.
A sudden jump from Porto to the Algarve midway through the trip, with no worthwhile stops in between, will feel long and unnecessary.

3. Keep in mind that rural and mountain roads are slower than they seem

In places like the Douro Valley, Peneda-Gerês Park, Madeira Island, or São Miguel Island, the roads are winding and mountainous. Even when the distance looks short on the map, the drive is slower and sometimes less suitable at night. Plan your longer drives for daylight hours, especially in mountain areas.

4. Don’t overload a single day with too many “must-see” sights

In Sintra, for example, you can’t realistically cover 4–5 sights in one day without turning the whole day into a race. It’s much better to pick 1–2 main highlights and leave time for wandering, viewpoints, and a relaxed coffee break. The same rule applies in the Douro Valley and the Algarve: quality is better than quantity.

5. In summer, start early for beaches and viewpoints

The Algarve, Sintra, and the Douro Valley get busy in summer, so if you’re traveling in July–August, head out early for the beaches, get to popular viewpoints ahead of the crowds, and check in advance where it’s best to park. For marine attractions in southern Portugal—the Algarve—booking ahead is almost essential in season. That’s especially true if you want to visit a specific water park on a certain day; this is one case where it’s better not to leave things spontaneous.

6. Choose your lodging areas wisely to cut down on hotel changes

A lot of travelers switch accommodations every night—and it gets tiring. Instead, it’s better to choose a base for 2–3 nights in a central area and take star-shaped day trips from there.
For example: Lisbon as a base for Sintra and Cascais, Porto as a base for a day in the Douro, and Albufeira or Lagos as a base for the Algarve.
