Porto and northern Portugal are where the Kingdom of Portugal was founded some 900 years ago. Rich in heritage and history, the city sits where the Douro River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Over the years, Porto has become one of the most beautiful cities in Europe—and surely the most beautiful and distinctive in Portugal. The city center is compact, so it’s easy to move quickly between the main sights. Still, Porto never loses its charm, and if you’ve already made the journey, it’s well worth staying for a few days.

We’ve put together a list of 3-star hotels in good locations—places where you can return each evening to a clean, comfortable room at reasonable prices after a day spent tackling Porto’s hills, slopes, and stairways. It’s also ideal for anyone planning a day trip from the northern city to nearby destinations such as Guimarães, Braga, or Aveiro, as well as natural areas like Peneda-Gerês National Park and the upper Douro Valley. A functional hotel that covers all the average traveler’s needs at the end of a long day—while staying close to restaurants and nightlife—can make all the difference.

2. Jardim da Batalha Boutique Hotel by Shiadu
A different and pleasantly surprising hotel tucked behind São Bento Station, beside the square by Santo Ildefonso Church, where the central Santa Catarina Street begins. Set in Porto’s upper town, the hotel is also very close to Aliados—just a 10-minute walk—as well as Clérigos Church and Livraria Lello. The location isn’t right in the center, but it’s very close and still within easy reach of many attractions.
The design feels quite different from what you might expect from a city hotel, aiming instead to give guests a more rustic atmosphere, especially with the green garden in the back courtyard. Rooms are very clean and have a cozy warmth that feels especially welcome after an intense day out in Porto, which stays gray through much of the year. There is a difference between the garden-view rooms and those without that view, but all are very comfortable. This hotel is particularly well suited to couples and older couples. The breakfast and intimate dining room are excellent.

Our Tips for Choosing a Hotel in Porto
Hotel category – In Porto, the difference between hotels by star rating is mainly reflected in the level of luxury and facilities, not in service standards or sleep quality. Porto’s 3-star hotels generally meet expected standards and sometimes even exceed them, since guesthouses in Portugal are usually very clean and well kept. In addition, many 3-star hotels in Porto tend to be on the edges of the center rather than right in its heart. They are often built to a 3-star standard specifically to make savings possible for travelers. In other words, expect larger, more functional hotels rather than the carefully designed properties in historic buildings typical of Porto’s 4- and 5-star hotels in the city center.
Hotel location and transportation to and from it – Three areas stand out in Porto: the iconic Ribeira along the Douro River, Gaia on the far side of the Dom Luís I Bridge and river, and our favorite area, Baixa-Sé, higher up in the city, especially around Aliados Avenue. Most 3-star hotels will be a few minutes’ walk from the centers of these areas. In practice, though, all of them are close to one another and easy to reach because Porto’s historic center is compact. The whole center is covered by metro stations, buses, and ride-share services such as Uber/Bolt, making it easy to get around and to leave the city as well.
Supply and demand – Porto’s main season runs from April to October. That said, over the past decade Porto has become such a sought-after destination that there’s lively tourist traffic year-round. Spring and summer can still be rainy, while winter is fully overcast, always cold, and gray. That doesn’t mean you can’t visit in winter—on the contrary, the city may even have a special charm in the colder season. Just remember to bring suitable clothing, and especially comfortable, non-slip shoes. Peak summer, in July and August, is the most expensive time to visit, since all of Europe is on vacation and tourist traffic is heavy across the continent.
Porto as a base for exploring northern Portugal – Absolutely possible, though it works best for nearby northern destinations, especially if you’re using public transportation or joining an organized tour, unless your hotel has parking. If you’re arriving by car, it’s essential to stay in the upper part of the city, around and above Aliados Avenue | Aliados. That area has more hotels with parking and also offers easier access when heading north. If you’re planning to travel by public transportation to Aveiro, Braga or Guimarães, you can take the metro to Campanhã Station | Campanha and continue from there to most destinations in the north.
