Portimão is, first and foremost, a classic summer beach vacation destination. At the same time, Portimão is excellently located for travelers exploring the Algarve’s attractions, landmarks, and villages. That also makes it a great base for a star-shaped trip, where you head out during the day to places like Slide & Splash water park or sail to Benagil Cave, then return to Portimão in the evening. In summer, the town stays lively well into the night, with plenty of restaurants open late, entertainment, and nightlife.

Most hotels in Portimão are not resorts, but rather standard European-style beachside hotels designed mainly as a place to stay. Peak season is July and August, when prices rise, though they are still relatively reasonable compared with neighboring Spain. At the edges of summer—late May to early June and late August to early September—rates drop sharply, even though the beach weather is still pleasant, and that is when you can find excellent deals. Airfare to Faro, about half an hour from Portimão, also falls significantly, so Portimão is well worth considering in the fall as well.

4. NH Marina Portimao Resort

Tips for Finding Hotels in Portimão
Summer is the hot season in the Algarve, especially July and August. The region starts waking up as early as May and stays that way through October.
Peace and quiet — Portimão, and other vacation cities ii the Algarve like Albufeira and Lagos, may not yet be the giant summer tourism powerhouse that parts of Spain are, but you will not be missing a thing here. That is also one of the reasons a summer vacation in Portimão is so appealing. Everything in the Algarve feels much more relaxed, and one small sign of that is how easy it still is to find parking, even in the busiest tourist areas.
Hotel prices in Portimão and across the Algarve are generally quite reasonable. July and August are the most expensive months, while outside the season prices can be extremely low—sometimes almost ridiculously so.
Hotel rooms in Portimão are usually large, often very large. Portimão is a clear summer vacation destination for Northern European families, so hotel rooms have been designed with longer stays in mind.
