8 Top-Rated Hotels in Braga

Braga’s northern-city center is flat and easy to navigate, and since most visitors choose to stay downtown, we’ve focused on hotels in the center or close by. There’s another side to Braga that draws travelers here as well: a spiritual one. Up on the hillside overlooking the city stand two major churches that are both religious pilgrimage sites and popular tourist attractions. That area has a small selection of hotels too, ideal for anyone seeking peace and quiet, with a trip that blends spiritual reflection and time in nature. Braga is also often used as a stop during a broader journey through northern Portugal, so we’ve included a few hotels that work especially well for travelers with a rental car.

Braga - Portugal - Bom Jesus do Monte stairs GREEN
The famous staircase leading up to Bom Jesus do Monte — the Church of Good Jesus — is Braga’s most visited site

Braga is now a growing city with a high quality of life, and it makes a wonderful day trip from Porto. Still, it’s also worth staying longer and using it as a base for exploring the natural sites and rural landscapes of northwestern Portugal. Braga gets plenty of rain, so spring and summer are the best times to visit, though the upside of all that rainfall is the intensely green scenery all around. Most attractions in Braga are in the city center — more specifically along the axis between Republic Square and the cathedral.

Braga also has two enormous and beautiful church complexes on the green hills to the east: Bom Jesus do Monte and Sameiro. Of the two, the Church of Good Jesus — Bom Jesus do Monte — is the attraction that draws the largest number of visitors to the city.

A list of hotels we loved in central Braga

1. INNSiDE by Meliá Braga Centro

An excellent new hotel from INNSiDE, the urban, locally inspired sub-brand of the Spanish Meliá group. It enjoys a perfect location right on Republic Square, facing the green gardens in the heart of town. Like other INNSiDE hotels, it’s thoughtfully designed with clean, bright lines. This is a great choice for couples who want to be close to everything and head out for a good dinner downtown after a day of sightseeing. It’s especially appealing during Braga’s long winter days, when coming back to a warm, inviting, comfortable room feels even better

. The hotel has an outdoor pool open in summer, along with an inner courtyard and a green garden that’s lovely to sit beside with a cup of coffee. There’s also a small spa with a heated indoor pool and additional facilities. All in all, it’s an excellent hotel for a romantic weekend in the second-largest city in northern Portugal.

2. Hotel Moon & Sun Braga

A small, welcoming hotel in an excellent downtown location, close to many attractions in Braga. The hotel sits right on the pedestrian street R. dos Capelistas, a wonderful shopping street in the city center that’s close to the main sights. It’s well suited to couples or families — though families would need two rooms — who want to stay near everything and perhaps drop off their shopping bags quickly before heading back out for more browsing or more exploring.

The rooms are very functional and clean. They’re on the small side, but not tiny, so they work perfectly well for a stay of two or three days. The hotel itself is carefully designed, the staff is very attentive and kind, and above all, the location is simply fantastic.

3. Vila Gale Collection Braga

A classically styled hotel in the city center on Largo Carlos Amarante. Several of Braga’s attractions are located in the square, and from the hotel it’s quick and easy to reach Avenida da Liberdade, with its famous central flower gardens. Part of the hotel is built directly into the large historic complex of the São Marcos church and hospital, the square’s most prominent landmark. As a result, some of its spaces — especially the public areas — are part of the 17th-century Baroque structure.

Beyond the appeal of staying in a historic building, another major advantage here is the generously sized rooms. The location is excellent as well, with everything close at hand. This large hotel suits both families and couples, and it also offers a spa plus indoor and outdoor pools, making it a good option year-round.

Hotels around the center — a good fit for travelers with a rental car in Braga

We’ve chosen hotels that work well for couples and families traveling through northern Portugal by rental car, with Braga as one stop along the way. Trips like these are usually circular itineraries that almost always begin in Porto, the North’s largest city. Braga will often be one of the first or last stops on a route like this. The hotels below are easy to reach in the evening, letting you explore Braga in the morning before continuing on to your next destination. Another option is to spend the afternoon in the city center and head up the next morning to Bom Jesus and its iconic staircase. Of course, you can also stay longer in Braga and use it as a base for day trips to nearby attractions and sights, such as Guimarães or Peneda-Gerês National Park.

1. Holiday Inn Braga, an IHG Hotel

This hotel is located east of the city center near the Braga Parque mall. Like many Holiday Inn properties, it sits by major road junctions, making it especially easy to reach and convenient to leave by car, whether you’re continuing your trip in Braga or elsewhere in northern Portugal. Although it isn’t in the center, it’s only about a five-minute drive away — just not within walking distance.

The hotel itself is relatively new, highly functional, and consistent with the standards of the British chain. Its rooms are more spacious than those in most hotels in the city center, and they include everything you need after a day of exploring. It’s a very good fit for couples and families touring northern Portugal by rental car, with Braga as a stop on the route.

2. Melia Braga Hotel & Spa

A five-star hotel from the Spanish Meliá chain. It’s a large property with spacious rooms and sizeable indoor and outdoor pools. The hotel is about a five-minute drive from the city center and also close to the malls in the eastern part of town, again around five minutes away. Even though it’s a five-star hotel, it isn’t overly expensive for much of the year, which makes it a great option for travelers who want to return to a roomy, comfortable space at the end of the day.

It’s also especially well suited to families traveling in northern Portugal: kids will enjoy the pools as well as the large public areas. There’s also a good restaurant on-site, so if you get back late and don’t feel like heading out again, it’s easy to have a pleasant meal right there. As you’d expect from a five-star hotel, room service is available too for anyone who doesn’t even feel like leaving the room at day’s end.

3. Hotel do Parque

This hotel sits right beside the large and famous church on the hill, Bom Jesus do Monte. As is well known, at the top of Braga’s iconic staircase stands the church, surrounded by a broad park, beyond which the city’s green rural landscape begins. Staying here is an especially good fit for believers who want to visit the church, but it’s not only for them. The hill is less than a 15-minute drive from Braga’s city center, so an overnight stay here still provides easy access to the city’s main attraction.

The hotel itself is housed in a 19th-century building that was recently renovated. The rooms are spacious and functional, and one of the nicest things is waking up in the morning and stepping out for an easy walk through the lovely garden around the church — or, for those feeling energetic, tackling the iconic staircase on foot. The hotel has parking reached from the back of the hill, which makes it a particularly sensible option for travelers with a car, especially since this is the most important site in Braga and one of the most significant in all of Portugal.

Our tips for choosing a hotel in Braga

Hotel standard – In Braga, differences between hotels by star rating mostly reflect the level of luxury and the range of facilities, rather than service quality or sleep quality. Hotel star ratings here generally meet expected standards and sometimes even go a bit beyond them, since accommodations in Portugal are usually very clean and well kept. More broadly, Braga has developed significantly over the past decade and has become one of the cities with the highest quality of life in Portugal. New hotels have opened here as well, so the overall standard is genuinely quite high.

Hotel location and getting to and from it – If you’re coming specifically to explore Braga and enjoy this green, pleasant city, it’s best to stay right in the center, where you can walk to almost all of the main sights. The clear exception is the major church on the hill with the famous staircase — Bom Jesus do Monte. Even so, there’s a convenient public bus from the city center that will take you up the hill.
For travelers driving through northern Portugal and stopping overnight in Braga, there are hotels just outside the city, as noted above, with large and convenient parking areas. Distances here are genuinely short, so staying slightly outside the center is no problem and often means easier parking and, usually, larger rooms as well.

Supply and demand – Braga’s main season is summer, in parallel with the high season in Porto. Spring and summer can still be rainy, but winter is fully overcast, consistently cold, and gray. That doesn’t mean you can’t visit in winter, only that a cold-season trip will be centered mainly around the city center. Peak summer, in July and August, is the most expensive time to visit, largely because the weather makes it easier to explore both the city and the surrounding area without getting drenched.

Braga as a stop during a trip through northern Portugal  – You could easily call it a must-stop. Whether for a few hours or for a day or two, Braga is a city well worth including if you’re heading north by car in Portugal. Trips through the north usually begin in Porto. It’s easy to plan your route so that you spend your first or last night in Braga during a northern Portugal itinerary, since Braga — along with nearby Guimarães — is one of the closest major cities and attractions in northern Portugal to Porto.
