10 hotels in excellent locations in Albufeira

Before we begin, it’s worth noting that the city has two main tourist hubs: the Old Town, next to Fisherman’s Beach, and, a few minutes’ drive east, the area around the Strip | Areias de São João / Oura.

Outside town, you’ll find larger hotels and resorts perched above the beaches, which in this part of the Algarve are almost always set below cliffs and reached by stairs. To the east stretches the Falésia coastline | Olhos de Água – Vilamoura, lined with long golden beaches, while to the west you’ll find the coves of São Rafael and the marina.

In the Algarve, it’s very common to rent a car for your vacation and use it to explore the many family-friendly attractions, including excellent water parks. Distances in southern Portugal are short, so it’s easy to see and do a lot with a car. If you’re renting one, you may enjoy the newer hotels east and west of Albufeira even more, especially since they usually offer free parking.

Here’s the list:

1. Hotel Sol e Mar Albufeira – Adults Only **** – beachfront in the best location possible

An adults-only hotel right on Fisherman’s Beach, with balconies overlooking the sea. This longtime favorite was recently fully renovated, and its rooms are bright and comfortable. The location is hard to beat for evening walks in the Old Town and waking up to the sound of the waves. Rooms are quite comfortable, the staff is welcoming, and access to the main sights and nightlife is excellent.

As mentioned, the hotel sits right above the center of the beach, and as soon as you head into town, you’re on charming, central R. 5 de Outubro. In summer, vacant rooms here are hard to come by, so it’s best to book quickly.

2. Kimpton Atlantico Algarve by IHG ***** – a huge resort above São Rafael Beach

Kimpton is located west of Albufeira Marina, above São Rafael Beach. This large hotel offers spacious rooms, modern facilities, and wonderful views. It’s the kind of place where you could easily stay without ever needing to leave. There are three pools, a huge garden, two restaurants, a gym, and seasonal activities. There’s also direct access down to the beach.

It really is a fantastic option in an area where you get the best of everything: close to town (5 minutes to the marina, 10 minutes to central Albufeira), close to the beach, and packed with excellent amenities and generously sized public spaces.

The hotel works equally well for families and couples, and if you’re traveling by car, parking is free.

A pleasant hotel near the Strip, east of the center. Staying here is a great choice if you want to combine beach days with nightlife. The rooms are comfortable, there’s a large outdoor pool, and the beach is just a short walk away.

The location is central without putting you right in the middle of the Strip’s noise, which makes for a great balance. It’s a good fit for couples and friends who also want to go out at night. The hotel is about a 5–7 minute walk from the Strip | Av. Sá Carneiro, and around 5 minutes on foot from lovely cliff-backed Oura Beach | Praia da Oura.

It offers apartments in various sizes, while also functioning as a hotel with restaurants and facilities. You can cook in your room or enjoy the hotel’s restaurants instead.

The property is ideal for longer stays, especially for families, though not only for them. Being right by the beach, unlike most hotels in the area, makes all the difference.

Located west of the town center, about a 15-minute drive away, the hotel has impressive oversized rooms that are really more like stylish small apartments. The property feels almost like a little town of its own, with a lovely pool, fashionable bars, and a spa among its highlights.

Views over Albufeira’s western coves are breathtaking, and the quieter beaches in the area are wonderful for sunset photos. Service is youthful and dynamic, with a clear lifestyle focus. Parking is free, and bikes are also available to rent. The hotel is close to several beaches, though it is not directly on the beach.

A few tips for your time in Albufeira

Albufeira is really the vacation capital of the Algarve. It’s just a half-hour drive from the airport in Faro, and in many ways it’s the center of the western Algarve, a region that has grown into a tourism and leisure powerhouse over recent decades while still managing to preserve its calm and authenticity.

Naturally, a summer vacation in June, July, or August is the most popular choice in Albufeira, but the city stays active year-round, including in winter, and especially around the December–January holidays, when shows and parties also take place.

What makes Albufeira special is its two very different sides. On one hand, it’s a relaxed and pleasant resort town like Portimão, Lagos, and others in the Algarve. On the other, the Strip in the eastern part of town is a nightlife and bar district with a feel not unlike resort destinations on the Costa del Sol or Spain’s Balearic Islands.

Check out our list of 12 top-rated Resorts in the Algarve…

We’ve put together a few tips for your Albufeira vacation and trip to help make your stay in Portugal’s beautiful southern tip even smoother:

  1. Where to stay? If nightlife matters to you, the Strip | Areias de São João/Oura is ideal. If you prefer a more authentic atmosphere and easy beach access, the Old Town is an excellent choice. For a longer, quieter beach getaway, head for the areas east of town around Falésia / Olhos de Água. Families looking for a vacation apartment will find plenty of large options around the marina and west of Albufeira.
  2.  Best season May–June and September–October are wonderful, with great weather and fewer crowds. July–August is peak season, so booking as far ahead as possible is a must. Winter is pleasant for walking around town and along the promenades, but the water is cold for swimming, and some hotels and businesses close.
  3.  Beaches – Fisherman’s Beach | Praia dos Pescadores in the Old Town, Oura Beach | Praia da Oura near the Strip, the long and stunning Falésia Beach | Praia da Falésia east of town that’s perfect for walks, and São Rafael beach, tucked between the cliffs west of town. Check the tides before walking between coves.
  4.  Cave and dolphin cruises Most boat trips depart from Albufeira Marina. It’s best to go either in the morning when the sea is calmer, or in the evening to catch the sunset too. In summer, advance booking is essential.
  5. Transportation and getting around A car makes it much easier to explore the beaches. In the Old Town, walking is the better option; parking can be tight in July and August. VAMUS buses are convenient for traveling between Algarve towns.
  6.  The Strip — good to know This area stays lively late into the night. So if you decide to stay nearby, it’s worth choosing a hotel or apartment a few minutes away from the main street, or in Santa Eulália, and then walking to the Strip.
  7. Food and sea Order Cataplana (a fish and seafood stew cooked in a copper pot), fresh sardines, and Arroz de Marisco. In the Old Town, you’ll find excellent seafood bars near the lower promenade.
  8. Water parks and attractions Zoomarine is perfect for a family day out; if you love waterslides, Aqualand and Aquashow are both a short drive away. Buy tickets in advance during peak season. Click here for the complete guide to water parks in the Algarve and Portugal…
