For families, the proximity to the beach is a major advantage; for couples, the spa and relative calm are a bonus, especially given the central location. Couples will enjoy the blend of open sea and a pleasant town filled with restaurants and bars. Lagos is also an excellent base for exploring the western Algarve, including Sagres and the peninsula. Tips for a Vacation in the Algarve

The Algarve in southern Portugal is one of Europe’s most sought-after summer destinations, thanks to a rare combination of golden beaches, dramatic cliffs, picturesque fishing towns, reasonable prices, and high-quality resorts that work well for both families and couples.

With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, the Algarve is also an ideal destination in spring and fall, when much of the rest of Europe is still chilly. Prices for accommodations, food, and attractions in the Algarve are generally lower than on the Spanish Riviera or the Costa del Sol, so it’s possible to enjoy a high level of service without stretching the budget too far.

On top of that, the Algarve feels more relaxed than Spain, less crowded and dense, while still offering a sense of nature and authenticity alongside excellent tourism infrastructure, such as the region’s three wonderful water parks. It’s a destination that brings together pampering, wild coastline, great food, and fair prices — which makes it an especially smart choice for a European getaway.

We’ve put together a few tips to help you plan a vacation in this beautiful region of southern Portugal:

1) Car rental — yes or no? If your resort is on the beach or by the marina and you’re planning to do the whole resort-bars-and-on-foot kind of trip, you can skip the car. If you want to hop between coves, towns, and nature reserves, though, having one makes things much easier, especially with kids and beach gear. Bottom line: renting a car in the Algarve is highly recommended because there’s a lot to see and plenty of attractions within relatively short distances. That way, you can plan some days as day trips and spend others at the hotel, perhaps heading out only for dinner or ice cream in town. For more information about renting a car in Portugal, click here…
2) Choose your area based on travel style Vilamoura is all about luxury and the marina; Albufeira suits families and action; Lagos and Alvor bring nature and vast beaches; Salgados offers dunes and a nature reserve. Match the resort to the kind of vacation you want, not just the star rating.
3) Beaches and cliffs – The Algarve does have a coastline stretching for dozens of miles, but many of its beaches require a long descent by stairs. That’s part of the experience, of course, but it’s worth knowing in advance if that may be difficult for you, and in general it helps to set expectations. Flat access from town to the beach is found mainly in Vilamoura, eastern Lagos, and central Albufeira, where there’s also an elevator down to the beach. In most other places, the beaches lie below the cliffs.
4) Seasons and peak travel May–June and September–October are the sweet spot, with excellent weather and lighter crowds. July–August is peak season, busier and more expensive; booking early for summer is essential because availability is limited. Winter is quiet and peaceful, though some services only operate partially.
5) Must-do day trips – Ponta da Piedade viewpoint (Lagos), the Benagil caves (by relaxed boat trip), Silves (a fortified town), and of course the Algarve’s water parks for kids. One of the great things about the Algarve is that everything is fairly close together, so it’s easy to plan half-day outings and spend the other half unwinding at the hotel or on the beach.
6) Water parks If that’s a big part of the vacation, consider staying near parks like Aquashow or Slide & Splash to cut down on driving, or choose a resort with slides so you can cover that right on the property.
